The Bread and Board: A Culinary Revival
When a beloved local sandwich shop closed its doors, two chefs from Portland, Oregon, saw an opportunityto revitalize a Jacksonville retail district. Their new culinary concept, deconstructed sandwichesserved on boards, fit the existing building well, but not the philosophy and brand of their newbusiness.
The ZINN design team was tasked with expressing this new vision for dining. They created a designconcept that juxtaposed the original structure with a new outdoor shade structure, signaling the arrivalof a modern era while extending the building's space into a green area. The opposing structures, cradling the different restaurant programs, created a formal tension that connected the spaces andstitched old and new into a transcendent modern condition.
The resulting indoor/outdoor scene engaged patrons with the lushly landscaped terrain, making the vistaa natural focal point even on rainy days. The Bread and Board's success as a community hub, embracingcustomers with warm welcomes and amazing food, is a testament to the power of creative design totransform a space and revitalize a neighborhood.
