old church, new church

This week we had an opportunity to visit the Unitarian Church in Jacksonville which was designed by Bob Broward in 1965. It is a stunning illustration of organic architecture and the power that space has on the individual. The church's inclusive philosophy is exemplified by it's physical connection to its surrounding landscape. Tranquil, without a hint of ornament, Broward's church provides the space and simplicity which allows your mind to wander to the greater issues of spirituality. Church design in the south has certainly changed in the last forty years. What was once an opportunity to explore the divine, has given way to slapped-together aluminum warehouses with little or no defining characteristics. Some may say that the worship of God should not be ornate but should it lack quality as well?  Where would you prefer to worship?
