the bread and board

When a weathered but beloved local sandwich shop closed its doors, two recently transplanted chefs from Portland, Oregon, saw an opportunity to push a Jacksonville retail district into a new era. The new culinary format, deconstructed sandwiches served on boards, fit the existing building well, but not the philosophy and brand of the new business.

The ZINN design team was tasked with expressing this new take on a dining standard. The design concept places the original structure in contrast to a new outdoor shade structure that, with its dynamic forms and flowing spaces, signals the arrival of a new player in the neighborhood while extending the space of the building through its glass facade into a green space beyond. The opposing structures, as they cradle the different restaurant programs, address each other in formal tension. The resulting juxtaposition connects the spaces, stitching old and new into a transcendent modern condition.

The Bread and Board’s indoor/outdoor scene engages patrons with the lushly landscaped terrain where, even on rainy days, the vista becomes a natural focal point for enjoying the establishment’s culinary delights. The business is thriving and has established itself as a community hub that embraces its customers with warm welcomes and amazing food.

This renovation was the recipient of a 2018 AIA Jacksonville Award of Excellence.
