go ahead! break the rules.
With clarity and purpose in mind, we give the rooms in our homes specific names. But that doesn't mean we can’t, and shouldn’t, break the “rules”. And why shouldn’t we make our homes work for us? After all, our living room, dining room, and entryway are really just space. Space we get to use however we like.
We often hear from people who believe they need more space, but really just have underutilized areas in their home. So before you waste an entire weekend scrolling through Zillow, think about what you really need, and how the spatial relationships might be tweaked to suit your family.
Is your dining table just an oversized mail drop on your way to the kitchen? Or could this space make a better sitting area, allowing family to gather in a cozy room near the kitchen?
Would creating space for dining in the current living room provide not only a nice table for holidays, but also create a space for the family to gather for game night or homework with a little more privacy from the kitchen? And might the larger space mean you can finally fit in that long farmhouse table and invite the whole family to dinner?
Don’t be afraid to make some bold moves in traditional spaces. Bookcases look amazing lining dining room walls, and are perfect for glassware and plates, or wine, or books! An out-of-the-way hall closet could become a quiet hideout, reading nook, or favorite nap spot.
Losing a foyer closet to a better space plan could give you a more useful mudroom. Small master bath? A well-placed tub can work well in the bedroom.
Injecting a little unexpected luxury to workspaces like the laundry room, garage, or garden shed can have a powerful psychological effect–you might even start enjoying yard work! And don’t forget to look up–adding beams, coffers, or color and pattern with paint or wallpaper can completely transform a room.
Just remember, it’s your space. There are no rules. You have total freedom to make it work for you!
