Saving a Mid-mod Gem: Reno on the Saint John’s River

This distinctive Riverside residence, originally designed in 1978 by Fisher and Associates of Jacksonville for the Fisher family, faced an uncertain future after sustaining significant damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. The storm surge inundated the first floor, jeopardizing the integrity of the structure and necessitating extensive repairs. This presented a unique opportunity not only to restore the home but to reimagine and enhance its original design intent: to create a light-filled, open-plan living space on the upper level that embraced the sweeping views of the Saint Johns River.

ZINN Architecture and Interiors was entrusted with the meticulous restoration of this neighborhood landmark. While the entire structure was carefully stripped to its frame, we remained committed to preserving the home's inherent character and floor plan. The central staircase, a defining feature of the original design, was completely reconstructed to serve as a sculptural centerpiece connecting the living room and kitchen.

The exterior facade underwent a subtle yet transformative refinement. By carefully adjusting the proportions to more closely align with the architects' original vision, we created a lighter, more elegant front elevation that appears to float against the backdrop of the river-facing facade. This sensitive approach to restoration ensured that the home's unique architectural identity was not only preserved but enhanced.

This project represents a successful blend of historic preservation and contemporary design. By meticulously restoring the home's structural integrity and thoughtfully updating its features, we have ensured that this Riverside gem will continue to delight and inspire for generations to come.
